A Record Year for Egrets
Over a hundred snowy egrets chose to nest in Palo Alto, California's Baylands Preserve in spring 2004, a number never seen before. Nestlings waited with open bills while parents took turns finding food for their hungry youngsters. The young birds demanded a meal by grabbing parent's bills whether the adult birds had anything for them or not. Adults won't feed curious nestlings when they fall out of nests so Baylands rangers rescued fallen birds. Will they be back in 2005? Biologists aren't sure.
