A Cloud of Sandpipers
Their flocks lift off and wheel like a pattern in an Escher drawing as they swoop around the bay, looking for food. Bills get muddy as they pick their way along the shore, foraging for buried crustaceans, mollusks and the odd insect. Western and other small sandpipers spend their whole year in San Francisco's mild climate.
